Job Summary

As a member of the Getty Digital’s management team, the Head of Getty Digital Imaging provides vision and guidance across the Getty organization, facilitating a sustainable, strategic digitization program.  This position will be charged with meeting the goals of ensuring increased visibility of and access to the Getty’s vast collections, and enhancing the Getty’s leadership role nationally and internationally.  Acknowledging the valuable innovative work currently being undertaken by the Getty’s programs will be paramount.  The position holder will be required to have sufficient expertise and management skills to actively and productively engage with and facilitate the success of multiple projects at once across the organization, and the ability to foster positive engagement around the organization. These efforts will support of the unique missions of each institute and the Getty as a whole, resulting in the coherent and efficient creation of digital content throughout the Getty.

Operating across programs to identify and pursue strategic objectives, the position holder will facilitate short and long range planning for the Getty’s digital imaging initiatives.  This approach will afford both strategic coherence and an economy of scale. The Head of Getty Digital Imaging will also represent the Getty’s interests pertaining to digitization and related digital scholarship initiatives internally and externally. The coordination this position provides will seek to position the Getty as a center of excellence within the library, museum, and science communities, developing the Getty’s role as a model institution and advisor.

 

Working closely with the Getty Digital Architect Team, the Head of Getty Digital Imaging will ensure that all aspects of digital media creation and repository deposit processes are working to support the Getty’s deployment systems.   

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for two imaging studios, one in the Getty Research Institute and one in the Getty Museum. Each studio is led by a Studio Manager who reports to the Head of Getty Digital Imaging. Total departmental budget is about $1.5 million annually with about 25 imaging professionals on the team.

  • Serve as primary liaison between Getty institutions and media production programs to promote collaboration, position resources, and ensure efficiencies.

  • Provide technical leadership in digitization and media creation processes including 2D, 3D, multispectral and hyperspectral imaging as well as audio and video digitization and creation.

  • Formalize and expand technical outreach to showcase the Getty’s capability and share its expertise.

  • Contribute to and operate within national and international technical standards.

  • Participate in collaborative and coordinated digitization initiatives with strategic partners and consortia, nationally and internationally.

  • Manage a +$1 million project to strengthen the Getty’s advanced imaging capabilities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; Master's preferred

  • 7 to 10 years managing technical projects and people

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The major responsibilities of The Head of Getty Digital Imaging can be grouped into two themes: technical expertise, and communication and collaboration.

 

The Head of Getty Digital Imaging will be a recognized expert in digitization and reformatting techniques and workflows. The candidate will also need to possess a thorough knowledge of current and emerging standards and best practices for imaging and media conversion.  The position holder will be expected to have the ability to draw upon a strong network within the community to understand major imaging trends and technological developments among the Getty’s peers and also in the field at large, bringing the most suitable technologies and techniques to bear on Getty projects. 

 

The Head of Getty Digital Imaging will also certify that digital assets are being sent to the correct repositories in the most efficient ways to ensure that they are of the most value to the Getty’s deployment systems.

 

Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences are essential for this position as it communicates with both media production departments and senior management.  The ability and skills necessary to positively engage all institutes in collaborative projects and the experience and credibility needed to instill confidence in their results will be central to this role.  Strong project management skills, especially the ability to multitask and prioritize; ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems creatively will be needed for this position to operate successfully.  Lastly, a major role of the Head of Getty Digital Imaging is the ability to identify and showcase the Getty’s most appropriate projects and capabilities to the library, museum, and science communities in order to develop the Getty’s role as a model institution and advisor.
