California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, 60 miles east of Los Angeles and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley. CSUSB serves approximately 20,000 students, of which 81% are first-generation college students and graduates about 5,000 students annually. The Photography program in the Department of Art & Design at California State University, San Bernardino is seeking a full- time, tenure track Assistant Professor in Photography and Video. The qualified individual will hold an appropriate terminal graduate degree, have some college/university teaching experience, a growing creative practice, professional record in their field and a wide range of skills in photography and video techniques, and be well versed in current issues, discourses, and the history of photography, video and/or lens-based media more generally. Published writing as well as client-oriented photography/videography would also be a plus.

The Photography program is part of the Department of Art & Design which has well-equipped analog and digital labs, smart classrooms, lighting studio, student galleries, and is the editorial home of Dotphotozine, a student-run publication of photography. The department is housed in the Visual Arts Center on campus with glass, ceramic, woodworking, metalworking, printmaking,  painting, design, and digital fabrication studios. The VAC also houses the AAM accredited Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), and the Visual Resources Center with a dedicated full-time VRC specialist.

The Department of Art & Design, as part of the College of Arts & Letters at California State University, San Bernardino, offers a BA in Studio Art Studies, a BA in Art (with concentrations in Art Education and Studio Art), a BA in Art History & Global Cultures, and a BA in Design Studies, along with a BFA in Art (with concentrations in Art Education and Studio Art), a BFA in Design (with concentrations in Interface Design, 3D Design, Motion Graphics, and Marketing), and an MFA in Studio Art. The department serves approximately 550 students in its majors per year, plus many other students from across campus. The core approach taken to teaching across all the areas of the department focuses on visual and material literacy, as well as critical and discursive analysis of art, craft, design and other cultural productions. Students that we serve gain a broad base of skills in the areas of art, art history, craft, and design, as well as research, critical thinking, problem solving, and writing. Through our programs we strongly encourage an open approach to understanding how all aspects of art, craft, design and cultural production contribute to imperatives of diversity and community engagement.

Position Summary

Teaching all levels of photography and video (in either the art or design programs), oversee the photo/video labs and lighting studio, program development, continue and expand creative and scholarly activities, perform committee duties at the department, college and university levels, student advising, and broaden links to local, regional and national communities in the professor’s area of expertise in order to promote further student success.
